Snack |
Yes, we do have snack in second grade! I piloted snack last year and received a positive response from my students, making me excited to tweak a few things and continue this year.

Why Snack? |

Can they have anything for snack?
YES, as long as it is healthy and nutritious. Throughout the year, we will be learning about foods and their effects on our bodies. We will reflect this learning in our implementation of snack in the classroom. In Michelle Fisk's article, "What are the benefits of children eating snacks during school?" he states that snacks should be full of important nutrients like iron, calcium, fiber and vitamins but should not be full of high calories, fat or sugar.
What is healthy and NUTRITIOUS?
Many people have different definitions of 'healthy' and 'nutritious'. For us, we are going to select snacks based on foods that will help us learn while quieting our stomachs. According to kidshealth.org, "snack can help kids from getting so hungry that they become cranky." Michelle Fisk tells us that glucose levels fall in between meals which can effect our moods, so it is important that students are provided with nutritious snacks that nourish their body. Last year, we tried many different snacks and found a wide variety of foods that were tasty and non-distracting; meaning, they were able to eat and work at the same time. I will include a list below, but the majority of our winning snack foods were low in sugar and high in nutritional value (fruits and vegetables).
What can I bring?
Here is a list of snacks the students liked last year! Please feel free to get creative as long as the snacks are HEALTHY (see above) and EASY to eat. Also please be advised of allergies when choosing snacks. We have students allergic to nuts and artificial food dyes. When reading the nutrition facts, look for "artificial colors" or "red dye #3, red dye #2, etc.)

How does it work?
Below is a link to an online sign-up sheet. I have taken out all of our holidays, so the dates left are the dates we are scheduled to be in school. Keep in mind these may change throughout the school year. If you sign-up, please sign-up for multiple times at once. The program will send you a reminder two days in advance! You will have to register to the website, but it only asks for name and email so it can send reminders.
